When Your Doodle Gets Stung By a Bee
Most bee or wasp stings happen on the face, paws or tail. If your Doodle does get stung, your first step is to remove the stinger to slow the spread of venom. If the stinger is visible, use something stiff like a credit card to flick it out – try not to squeeze it with your fingers or tweezers. You can offer relief with a cold (not frozen) compress while you watch for swelling. If you notice excessive swelling, get the Benadryl from your pet first aid kit and ask your vet for the appropriate dose. Even better, have a card in the first aid kit with the appropriate dose written down.
Signs of a severe reaction that require vet attention are:
- the area around the sting site balloons up
- within 10 minutes healthy pink gums turn gray
- Drooling, difficulty breathing, diarrhea
- becomes confused and wobbles when walking
