Teach Your Doodle to Back-Up
Winter isn’t here yet, but when it finally arrives it’s a good idea to have some fun interactive activities in mind to keep your Doodle’s brain busy. Remember a bored Doodle might chew, bark, or find other negative ways to pass the time. They don’t need constant stimulation, but going from an active few months to a more sedentary lifestyle might provide too much downtime for him.
It’s a great time of year to teach new tricks, not just manners – those should be taught as your Doodle grows. Tricks are just for fun. I’ve read the instructions where the teacher uses a clicker. I find that sound to be so annoying, I can’t even bare to incorporate it. Just know, when I say “Yes” – a horrid click would also be used.
Back Up
- Begin with your Doodle standing in front of you.
- Lean or take a step forward
- As your Doodle shifts her weight back – or steps back – say”Yes” and give a treat
- Repeat several times – with the “Yes” and treat every time she moves back.
- Now add the command. Give the “Back-up” command BEFORE you lean.
- She will anticipate that “Back-up” means you’re about to lean forward.
- “Yes” and treat – now go forth and practice. I guarantee Doodles are smart enough to not need the stupid clicker. They were my puppies first, they’ll wonder why you’re using that thing – ha!
