Teaching the dog “Wipe Your Paws” – this one is for Jim to teach Winston and Tula.
- Begin with a towel or small bath mat – something that be folder over.
- In a corner, with the Doodle watching, place a yummy treat on the mat and fold the corner over it.
- Encourage the Doodle to uncover the treat. Say “Yes” and reward with another treat when he “wipes” with his front paws.
- Repeat several times – simply allowing the treat in the rug to be uncovered, Â saying “Yes” and rewarding when the “wiping” occurs.
- Now add the command. “Wipe your paws.” Say “yes” and reward.
- Once the Doodle connects the command with the wiping motion, stop placing a treat in the mat and simply command “Wipe your paws” – say “yes” and reward.
As with any training session, it’s important to begin and end on a positive note. Start and end by giving a command that you’re sure your Doodle knows – for instance “sit”. This will give him confidence at the beginning and the knowledge that he’s pleased you at the end.
