Puppy Socialization Do’s and Don’ts are the subtle differences in signs from your doodle and how you work with them.
Pushing your pup to do something she’s afraid of can actually increase her fear, so try to keep her relaxed and happy when socializing her.
Signs of fear are; a tail that is tucked under and hiding behind you.
Signs of acceptance are; a wagging tail and a playful attitude.
Do encourage your puppy, let her approach the new person or thing at her own pace. If she shows hesitation, move back a little to her comfort zone. When
she finally approaches, reward her with a treat and tell her she’s a “good girl”.
Don’t force her to approach a new worrisome object or person that will reinforce her fear. Don’t scold her for being afraid. Don’t encourage her with soft “baby talk”words
when she’s afraid. Instead of giving her confidence, your soft tone is conveying the message that her behavior and reaction to the situation in that second is good….so you’re telling her being afraid is good.
Instead talk to her in an animated voice— showing enthusiasm for the situation, your voice will help her relax. She’ll notice that you’re not afraid and will match your enthusiasm.
Don’t be discouraged if she’s initially reluctant to progress. You may need to move back from the new object, let her relax with a treat and talking then slowly take a step or two forward. Be calm and remain patient.
It may require several sessions for your puppy to accept certain things and situations, your patience and reassurances will lead to success.
