Supplements For Your Doodle that I Swear By, and why….
My adult dogs all eat Kirkland Chicken and Rice food from Costco. Kirkland food is corn, wheat, and soy free – it’s a good dog food at an affordable price and we’ve been happy with it for years. If a dog has a food allergy, it’s typically going to be to corn, wheat, or soy – Kirkland eliminates those components from their diet. I’ve never seen evidence of food allergies in my dogs (i.e. Scratching, paw licking, or ear infections), maybe it’s because we’ve used Kirkland for so many years.
Even though the kibble is nutritionally balanced, I add a little “extra” stuff. I only used supplements that are manufactured and/or labeled for dogs, rather than for humans. We have different nutritional needs than our Doodle friends, so I prefer to stick with things that are approved for canine consumption.
Vitamins: I sprinkle some Clovite, a granular vitamin made for all domestic animals, over their food to promote good coats.
Enzymes: We use a digestive enzyme called Prozyme, purchased through Amazon. Prozyme assists with the absorption of nutrients and I’ve found a huge difference it their overall appearance with Prozyme.
Added Fat: In the winter I add a little corn oil to their food, about a tablespoon, for the extra fat and again healthy coats in the dryer months.
The most important supplement, in my opinion, is food grade Diatomaceous Earth. I sprinkle it on my dog’s food – 1 tablespoon per adult dog. DE is an organic supplement that controls both internal and external parasites. I purchase DE on Amazon, if you shop for it, make sure you buy Food Grade only – it’s different than the DE used in pool filters and gardens. Diatomaceous Earth claims to have health benefits for humans as well, Jim and I take our daily “dose of dirt” to help control our cholesterol.
