Until recently I thought Bully Sticks were beef jerky for dogs, they are but not made from anything I would have considered. Bully Sticks are made from a bull or steer penis – yep. Our Doodles don’t care what part they’re chewing on, the problem is that they are raw and therefore possible carriers of germs. Raw treats, just like raw dog food may be contaminated with germs that can cause illness in the dogs and the humans that handle them. In treats tested, some of the bacteria found contained antibiotic resistant E.coli. Bully sticks aren’t alone, pigs ears have been found to contain high levels of Salmonella contamination in Canada and the U.S. If you’re going to give these raw treats to your dogs, be sure to wash your hands after handling them and do not allow your children to touch them.
The study I read went on to discuss the high caloric content of these treats….they had me at E. coli and Salmonella. I’m sticking with my hard rubber toys, thank you very much.
