A Fun and Free Inside Activity
One of the games the trainer shared with us is a simple game of hiding and seek. We began with several empty boxes in a variety of sizes – 6-8 total. Place the boxes relatively close together on the floor, and hide treats in several of them. Instruct the dog to “sit, stay” and then release to “search.” Of course, with their keen sense of smell, the treats are found in short order. Initially, the dog watched, then progressed to being out of the room while the treats were loaded. As the “search” skill advances, add lids, turn the boxes upside down, and move containers to different rooms. For Winston, the treats need to be of high value to hold his interest. Jack, on the other hand, will play to find his favorite stuffed animal. Jack is a fiend for “fetch.” When I ignore the toy tossed at my feet, he places it in my lap. I know, the trainer says I’m supposed to initiate play – but he’s so stinking cute, how can I resist?
We also have a couple of interactive dog puzzles by Nina Ottosson. They’re great fun, but I have to say, they don’t hold the dog’s interest for long enough to justify the high price. Just my opinion. Of course, I bought them atTJ Maxx – so I can’t complain too much. The boxes are free from Costco and the dogs have just as much fun with them.
