It’s Back to School Time for the Doodles
I did a brief search on the internet for some of the larger cities in Virginia to verify that these classes were indeed possible. You can modify some of the activities to be fun backyard games as well, and I’ve included some highly recommended books to help you have a bit of instructional fun at home. If you already have a full schedule and look forward to having some time to unwind with your doodle, he’ll be happy with a walk and a cheerful conversation. Go ahead, share your day – he won’t understand your words but will gladly be a sounding board for your big projects. Even better for me is drinking a cup of coffee while using Chuck-It by Kong. It gives Winston a great workout while Jim and I chat about our days.
Agility Classes – the dogs will have fun jumping through hoops, doing figure eights, walking a see-saw, and making their way through tunnels. For DIYers or those who have significant “honey-doers” like me, Do It Yourself Agility Equipment is the book for you.
Rally Obedience Classes – In these classes, you follow the instructions on the signs along the course. For instance, step back, make a turn, slow or pick up your pace, or weave through cones. It’s more advanced than basic obedience and requires the doodle to pay close attention to your signals. Try The Ultimate Guide to Rally-O to see if this is for you.
Flyball – In this game, the dog races over several hurdles spaced 10 feet apart. The dog pulls a string that releases a ball, retrieves, and returns to the starting point over the hurdles. Turn the game into a relay race by making teams. For the “at home” guide – try The Beginner’s Guide to Flyball Racing – it’s even available on Kindle.
Tracking Classes – the teacher sets a trail with a “prize” at the end. For at-home fun, try the book Fun Nosework for Dogs – I found it on Amazon.
Therapy Training – to become a therapy dog requires a calm temperament and good obedience training. Lots of our doodles have become certified therapy dogs; it’s gratifying for their people as well as the people they visit. The Canine Good Citizen, Every Dog Can Be One is an excellent resource for training when therapy certification is your goal.
