Probiotics for your Doodle’s Tummy?
Any doodle owner knows they come with sensitive tummies. I’ve had vets tell me, if the stools are negative for parasites or protozoans, adding a probiotic might help. A recent veterinary school publication states the quality of most pet probiotics is inferior. Most pet probiotics don’t even list their bacterial counts, some print false information on the label. The FDA doesn’t regulate these products, so there is no consequence for false labeling. Of the 25 probiotic products tested, only four meet the standards for quality control.
There is no substantial evidence that probiotics are effective in dogs. Some may benefit from them; however, most will see no change. Suppose you decide to give them a go. In that case, the four that receive the thumbs up regarding quality control are FortiFlora by Purina, Prostora by Iams, Proviable by Nutramax, and a human variety VSL #3 from VSL Pharmaceuticals.
My belief has always been that variety is not suitable for a doodle’s digestive tract. I keep Winston and Tula on Taste of the Wild dog food, and their one treat a day is a Wild Blue Salmon biscuit – that’s it. NOTHING else ever passes their lips. I rotate the variety of Taste of the Wild with each bag – and they love wild boar. I do practice what I preach (regarding a restricted doddle diet), and in the over eleven years we’ve had Mr. Winston, we’ve never had one loose stool.
